Biodiversity Net Gain
10% biodiversity net gain requirement for development
Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) is a mandatory requirement for most developments in England, requiring development proposals to deliver at least a 10% increase in biodiversity compared to the pre-development baseline.
At Stour Ecology Ltd, we undertake Biodiversity Net Gain assessments using the Statutory Biodiversity Metric developed by DEFRA. Through habitat surveys, habitat mapping and metric calculations, we help clients understand their BNG obligations and identify practical, cost-effective solutions to achieve compliance.
Engaging an ecologist early in the design and planning process can significantly improve BNG outcomes. Early consideration of biodiversity allows habitat retention, enhancement and creation measures to be incorporated into the site layout from the outset, often reducing costs, avoiding redesigns and minimising the need for off-site compensation.
From habitat surveys and metric calculations to Biodiversity Gain Plans and long-term management strategies, we provide end-to-end support throughout the Biodiversity Net Gain process.
Whats included?

Why start BNG early?
Incorporating Biodiversity Net Gain at the earliest stages of project design can:
- Maximise opportunities for on-site biodiversity gains
- Reduce the need for costly off-site units
- Avoid delays during planning
- Improve the efficiency of site layouts
- Streamline the planning process
